The Carpet Shark

The Wobbegong is a large species of shark (3.2m long) with an unusual body. Its broad, flat head has heavy tassels of skin falling down from the sides, giving it a carpet-like appearance. Hence it is also called Carpet shark.
The wobbegong's body is not streamlined like other sharks, and hence is not able to move fast to catch prey. This does not seem to bother the wobbegong, as it waits patiently, absolutely still for its food on a coral or a rock or among seaweeds. As its mottled skin and head tassels give the appearance of a rock overgrown with weeds, a fish or a crustacean may wander quite close to it before realising that it is a predator and then it is usually too late to escape the wobbegong's powerful jaws.
